On Thursday, November 12 at 7 PM, historian Dr. James T. Fisher will give a lecture on his new book "On the Irish Waterfront: The Crusader, the Movie, and the Soul of the Port of New York" in the Pope Lecture Hall at Saint Peter’s College.
Dr. Fisher’s book is an account of the social history of the New York/New Jersey waterfront, from the rise of Irish American businessmen and political bosses like Frank Hague to the Hague machine’s defeat and the emergence container shipping which changed the nature of the port forever. Along the way, Dr. Fisher tells the story of Jesuit priest John M. "Pete" Corridan, the crusading priest committed to winning social justice for the port's dock workers and upon whom the character of Father Pete Barry in On the Waterfront is based.
The event is free and open to the public.
